Did you know that every minute delay in accessing blood increases mortality odds by 5%? Yet, only 1-2% of emergency medical services carry blood for transfusions. This is due to outdated payment policies and scope of practice laws.
Today, we're advocating for improved patient access to blood transfusions on ambulances. We're calling on Congress to modernize federal insurance program payment policies to provide sufficient reimbursement for prehospital blood transfusions.
This small change can save lives and significantly improve our nation's emergency medical response capabilities. Learn more at BloodAdvocacyWeek.org and take action today! #BloodAdvocacy

In trauma cases, timely blood transfusions can mean the difference between life and death. Research shows that every minute of delay in accessing blood increases mortality odds by 5%. Despite this, most patients don't receive their first transfusion until they reach the hospital.
The root cause? Outdated reimbursement policies. Currently, Medicare, TRICARE, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans have bundled payment rates insufficient to cover the cost of necessary infrastructure and blood components for prehospital transfusions.
As part of Blood Advocacy Week 2025, we're urging Congress to:
Update federal insurance program payment policies
Update TRICARE payment policy
These changes will allow for broader adoption of prehospital blood transfusions, potentially saving countless lives.

In our digital age, blood centers face a growing challenge: sophisticated cyberattacks. These vital institutions, which ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply for patients in need, are vulnerable to malicious actors just like many other institutions today.
A successful cyberattack on a single blood center could have far-reaching consequences: • Disruptions to blood collection and distribution • Cancelation of elective surgeries and delays in non-emergency patient care due to diminished blood supplies • Significant financial losses and operational setbacks
As part of Blood Advocacy Week 2025, we're calling on Congress to support legislation and funding initiatives that will empower blood centers to fortify their cyber defenses. By investing in the cyber resilience of our blood community today, we can ensure the continued availability of life-saving blood products for all Americans tomorrow.
Join us in advocating for stronger cybersecurity measures to protect our nation's blood supply! Learn more and take action at BloodAdvocacyWeek.org #BloodAdvocacy

Blood centers are the lifeblood of our healthcare system, but they face a growing threat: cyberattacks. Recent incidents have exposed vulnerabilities that could have devastating consequences for patient care and national security.
The impact of a successful cyberattack extends far beyond local communities. As other blood providers step in to meet patient needs, the entire national blood supply chain can be strained, creating a domino effect that threatens healthcare delivery across the country.
To safeguard our nation's blood supply, blood centers require immediate support to:
Modernize outdated IT infrastructures
Implement robust cybersecurity measures
Enhance staff training and awareness programs
Develop comprehensive incident response plans
As part of Blood Advocacy Week 2025, we're urging Congress to act. We need legislation and funding initiatives that will empower blood centers to fortify their cyber defenses.

Lab-developed tests are lifelines in urgent situations. New FDA regulations threaten to delay care & increase costs. Tell Congress: we need sensible oversight, not red tape! Learn more and take action: BloodAdvocacyWeek.org #BloodAdvocacy
-
Did you know that laboratory-developed tests (LDTs) in blood centers are crucial for rapid, life-saving decisions? These tests provide vital information in time-sensitive medical situations and ensure safe, timely blood transfusions.
However, new FDA regulations set to take effect in 2024 threaten to create unnecessary hurdles. These regulations could lead to: • Delayed patient care • Increased costs • Stifled innovation • Resource diversion from critical operations
Blood centers already operate under a comprehensive regulatory framework that ensures the quality and validity of their tests. Additional regulation could hinder patient care by introducing unnecessary delays and bureaucratic hurdles.
This Blood Advocacy Week, we're calling on Congress to:
Encourage the FDA to revoke the 2024 Lab Developed Test final rule
Exempt blood center LDTs from any new reforms of LDT regulation
By taking action, Congress can ensure uninterrupted, life-saving care for patients across America. Join us in advocating for sensible oversight that maintains efficiency without compromising safety. Visit BloodAdvocacy.org now and take action. #BloodAdvocacy

In May 2024, the FDA issued a far-reaching final rule subjecting in vitro diagnostic products (IVDs) to unprecedented regulatory scrutiny. This mandate threatens to create a perfect storm of delayed patient care, increased costs, stifled innovation, and resource diversion—all of which could compromise the efficiency and effectiveness of blood center operations.
Key points to consider:
Blood center LDTs are lifelines in urgent, life-saving situations
They're performed exclusively for healthcare providers treating patients in clinical settings
Blood centers already operate under a comprehensive regulatory framework
The existing multi-layered approach provides rigorous oversight and regular inspections, creating a robust safety net for patient protection. Additional regulation could introduce unnecessary delays and bureaucratic hurdles, potentially harming patient care.
This Blood Advocacy Week, we're urging Congress to: • Encourage the FDA to revoke the 2024 Lab Developed Test final rule • Exempt blood center LDTs from any new reforms of LDT regulation
By taking action, we can maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of life-saving procedures while upholding the robust existing regulatory framework.
How can you help? Visit BloodAdvocacy.org now and take action, share this information, engage with policymakers, and support initiatives that protect critical lab-developed tests in blood centers. Together, we can ensure that life-saving care remains uninterrupted. #BloodAdvocacy

Red tape is holding back blood centers. Tell Congress: We need smart reforms to boost efficiency, cut costs & save lives. Join us in calling for change at BloodAdvocacyWeek.org #BloodAdvocacy
-
Let's focus on a critical issue today: unnecessary regulatory barriers that hinder blood centers' ability to efficiently collect and distribute life-saving blood products.
We're advocating for several key reforms:
Streamline licensure for new donation sites
Modernize testing requirements
Eliminate duplicate regulations
Maximize usable platelet donations
Increase plasma regulation flexibility
Allow for safe, timely blood processing
Expand the donor base by aligning deferral periods
These changes can increase efficiency, enhance blood product availability, reduce costs, and support innovation in blood banking. Join us in urging the Administration to implement these commonsense reforms to cut red tape and support a safe, efficient, and available blood supply for all patients. Learn more and take action at BloodAdvocacy.org #BloodAdvocacy

Today we're addressing a critical issue: outdated regulations that impede innovation, delay the opening of new donation sites, and ultimately impact patient care.
Key Issues and Proposed Solutions:
Streamline Licensure: Update FDA processes to allow quick, safe expansion of donation sites.
Modernize Testing: Eliminate unnecessary and outdated tests while maintaining safety standards.
Rationalize LDT Regulation: Ensure blood center tests aren't subject to duplicative oversight that will decrease availability of essential tests.
Expand the Platelet Supply: Lower content requirements to expand platelet availability.
Flexible Plasma Regulation: Allow plasma not needed for transfusions to be made into for life saving medications that are often in shortage.
Extend Processing Time: Allow blood centers to increase efficiency and rationalized staffing by allowing more time for processing.
Align Deferral Periods: Reduce the deferral period for incarcerated individuals to three months, in line with similarly risky activities.
These changes can significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our nation's blood supply system. By implementing these reforms, we can: • Increase the efficiency of blood collection and distribution • Enhance blood product availability for patients in need • Reduce unnecessary costs and resource allocation • Support innovation in blood banking and transfusion medicine
We have a responsibility to advocate for policies that improve patient care and public health. Let's unite in calling for these commonsense reforms to cut red tape and support a safe, efficient, and available blood supply.
How can you contribute? Visit BloodAdvocacy.org and take action, share this information with your network, engage with policymakers, and support initiatives aimed at streamlining blood center operations. Together, we can ensure that our blood supply system meets the evolving needs of patients across America. #BloodAdvocacy
